Mac Tips - Using the Dictionary

Apple has a really cool feature that you might not even know about. The dictionary is built into the Mac operating system. 

You can search the definition of a word simply by selecting the word and right clicking on it. Then click "Look Up (word here)". This will search the dictionary for your word.

The word will be placed into a yellow bubble and your definition will appear in a popup window on the screen.

Acrobat Tip: Splitting Large PDFs

Ever wonder how to split a long PDF into multiple files? Adobe Acrobat has a tool you can use to do this. This is useful if you need to break up a large file to send over email or save each page of a PDF in an individual file so you can send each page to a different person.

Emergency Text Alerts for Computers Update

As mentioned in a University Wide Notice earlier this week, Groupwise Messenger, our emergency messaging tool for University owned computers, will not be used for emergency messaging after October 6, 2013. 
To ensure that emergency communications can be delivered to classroom and office computers, we are deploying the new emergency messaging client for university computers, AlertUs. It will be automatically deployed to different areas of campus starting at the following days:

MyFSU Login Changes Starting September 20, 2013

All employees & students will need to have set up a new password using the new password management system (the one for Active Directory at Employees, if your computer was migrated to Active Directory this summer, you have already changed your password.
If you have not set your password in Active Directory, you need to do this before September 20, 2013 to be able to continue to log in to MyFSU and other Ferris computing resources. You will not be able to use your Novell password to access MyFSU beginning September 20, 2013.

The migration from Novell to Active Directory has affected everyone at Ferris sometime during the past year. This town hall is an opportunity for you to provide the FSU Information Technology (IT) department with your feedback on the project - What worked? What didn't work? What can IT do better during the next big project; migrating from Lotus Notes to Office 365 email.

There will also be an opportunity to learn more about what you and your students must do to before September 20, 2013 to ensure you don't temporarily lose access to MyFSU. You will also learn how to use the new password management tool and how to access your network drive space using Webstorage. 

IT staff will be available after the town hall from noon to 1:00 PM in MCO 213 to answer individual questions and assist with setting up challenge questions so you can use the new online password management tool.

Let Excel Be Your Calculator

Do you need to put numbers into a spreadsheet?  Do you need to add, subtract, multiply, or divide them?  If you do then you will want to use the formula features in Excel.  These features will save you time so you don't have to add up the numbers before you enter them into your excel spreadsheet.

Searching The Local Computer In Windows 7

Did you know Microsoft has made it simple to search in Windows 7? If want to search your local computer, you can simply click on the Start Menu and begin typing where it says "Search programs and files." As soon as you begin typing in this area, results will appear above the box.  

The search will find programs installed on your computer and any files you have saved. This is a quick and easy way to open programs and access files saved on your computer.

SPSS Statistics Software Upgrade to Version 20

TAC is currently in the process of upgrading the SPSS Statistics software to version 20 in certain labs this fall semester.
